To protect consumers, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a nationwide recall of canned tuna sold at grocery stores due to a potential botulism risk. The affected products, made using tuna sourced from Tri-Union Seafoods, are sold under popular brand names, including Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s.
The recall spans dozens of states, affecting various retail chains nationwide. Trader Joe’s locations in New York and New Jersey are included in the recall, as well as outlets in 16 other states and Washington, D.C. The move comes as a precautionary measure after testing revealed that the tuna may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism, a rare but serious illness caused by a potent neurotoxin.
Botulism, while rare, can lead to severe health issues, including paralysis, breathing difficulties, and, in some cases, death. The FDA urges consumers who purchased the affected canned tuna products to dispose of them immediately or return them to the store for a refund.
The recalled products, typically found in solid and chunk tuna varieties, were distributed in various sizes and packaging formats. The FDA has provided a complete list of affected products, including batch numbers, available on their website.
Brands Affected:
- Genova
- Van Camp’s
- H-E-B
- Trader Joe’s (in New York, New Jersey, and other states)
The FDA has stressed that there have been no reported cases of botulism linked to the affected tuna at this time. However, as a safety precaution, all consumers are advised to check their pantries and discard any products matching the recall details.
