In a compelling episode of the Faith in Focus podcast, Bishop Oliver McDowald of the East New York Church of God of Prophecy offered a powerful reflection on the evolving role of the church in today’s communities. With decades of pastoral experience and a deep well of spiritual conviction, Bishop McDowald shared how faith, resilience, and inclusive leadership are vital tools for transforming lives and neighborhoods.

A Calling Rooted in Legacy

Bishop McDowald’s journey into ministry began with a legacy of faith from his grandmother. Her devotion left an enduring impression on him. “My commitment and dedication to the work of God led me to experience a genuine call to the ministry,” he recalled. This foundational influence shaped his walk with God and his approach to leadership and service.

His upbringing and early faith experiences laid the groundwork for a life of ministry centered on development and compassion—especially crucial in a community as diverse and dynamic as East New York.

Meeting the Needs of a Diverse Community

The East New York neighborhood, known for its cultural richness and socioeconomic challenges, presents opportunities and trials for local churches. “We believe it is a good opportunity to be located in that area of a most cultural, diverse people or neighborhood in New York. We see both the good and the bad,” said Bishop McDowald.

His church’s mission—to be “a vibrant witness to our community”—is a testament to its unwavering commitment. This commitment is lived out through practical outreach and holistic care. From offering spiritual nourishment to physical assistance through a long-running soup kitchen and pantry, the East New York Church of God of Prophecy stands as a beacon of hope. “We have, for almost 30 years, operated a soup kitchen and pantry for the community, serving hundreds of clients bi-weekly, even through the pandemic crisis,” he said.

Addressing Modern-Day Challenges

The church’s ministry has expanded to confront modern issues head-on, including immigration and elder care. “With the recent influx of migrants in our community, we have seen a greater number of migrants coming into our pantry and our soup kitchen,” McDowald noted. “The current immigration environment is, of course, one of those things on our radar.” The church has not shied away from these challenges but has proactively partnered with legal firms to offer immigration guidance and support.

The church has partnered with legal firms to offer immigration guidance and support. Additionally, the aging population in the area presents new responsibilities. “We have a growing senior population, some of whom have become shut-in since the COVID pandemic,” he said, emphasizing the church’s commitment to staying connected with every segment of the community through programs like home visitation.
